The Palace of Holyroodhouse among trees, seen from Salisbury Crags above Holyrood Park

Where to Stay Near Arthur’s Seat

Sleep at the foot of the volcano and walk everywhere. Here is where to stay.

Edinburgh is compact, so almost any central hotel puts you within half an hour’s walk of Arthur’s Seat. But staying close to Holyrood Park means you can be on the summit for sunrise, or stroll up after dinner on a long summer evening — and it is noticeably quieter than the top of the Royal Mile.

There are two sensible areas. Beside Holyrood Park — at the foot of the Royal Mile, or on the university’s leafy Pollock estate under Salisbury Crags — puts you minutes from the paths. The Old Town and city centre puts you among the pubs, restaurants and sights, with a 15–25 minute walk downhill to the park.

Edinburgh hotel prices vary enormously with the date: August and Hogmanay can cost several times as much as a week in November. For that reason we do not print nightly rates. Guest scores are from Trip.com; every card links out for live availability.

Booking tips

  • August and Hogmanay sell out and prices soar. Book months in advance, or consider university rooms, which are released for the summer.
  • Parking is scarce and expensive in the centre. If you are driving, check what your hotel offers before you book.
  • Hills and stairs are everywhere in the Old Town. Ask about lifts if mobility is a concern.
  • Edinburgh introduced a visitor levy on overnight stays in 2026; check whether it is included in the price you are quoted.

Once you have a bed, plan the climb with our routes guide and pick a guided hike.
